How to Clean Moldy Gutters (and Keep Them That Way) in Coastal NC

By David Allard

Our humid coastal climate is hard on gutters. Trapped leaves hold moisture, and before long you have black mildew and algae growing inside the trough, adding weight and choking water flow. Here is how to clean moldy gutters safely — and how to keep them clear.

What you will need

  • A stable ladder and a spotter
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • A gutter scoop or trowel and a bucket
  • A garden hose, plus a mild oxygen-bleach solution for mildew

Step by step

Start by removing debris by hand into a bucket, working away from the downspout. Flush the trough with a hose to find the flow direction and any leaks. For mildew stains, apply an oxygen-bleach solution, let it sit briefly, then scrub gently and rinse. Finally, run water to the downspout and confirm it drains freely; if it backs up, the downspout itself is clogged and needs clearing.

Staying safe

If your home is more than one story, or the roof is steep or wet, this is a job to hand off. Falls from ladders are the most common gutter-cleaning injury. A professional cleaning also includes an inspection for loose hangers and early fascia rot.

How to keep mold from coming back

Mold returns wherever debris and moisture sit. The most reliable fix is to keep debris out in the first place with gutter guards, paired with a seasonal flush. If you would rather skip the ladder entirely, we offer maintenance plans and gutter guard installation across Wilmington, Leland, and Hampstead. Call (910) 452-4045 for a free estimate.
